have a tissue? - Carolina Morning News via Lowcountry NOW - "At night, my

'Honey, where are the tissues? I think you used the last one and I need
more.'...Yes, we are just two of the some 30 million Americans who suffer from seasonal
allergies. The most difficult season for allergy sufferers is the spring. Why is
that?"

►February 28, 2004 - We have become allergic to our western way of life - Complementary healthcare has a vital role to play in the 21st century - comment - The Guardian, UK - "There is accumulating evidence that the rise in allergies could be directly linked to the way in which we live and the environment which we inhabit. Sir Tom Blundell, chairman of the the Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution, argues that 'given our understanding of the way chemicals interact with the environment, you could say we are running a gigantic experiment with humans and all other living things as the subject'."
Comment: Although too few properly designed
studies have been done to investigate whether or not vaccines can be counted
among the environmental insults which might contribute to the rise in allergies,
there is some indication that they may. For more on this, go to

Fight allergies the natural way, Charles urges NHS - The Guardian, UK -
"Prince Charles is urging the NHS to make complementary medicine much more
widely and freely available to counteract a big increase in the number of
allergy sufferers...In an article in today's Guardian, the prince claims that
such an increase in provision need not cost the NHS huge additional expenditure
and will help to prevent the spread of allergies, which otherwise may affect
half the population within a decade...The prince contributed the piece after
reading a Guardian front page story which warned that half the population of
Europe would suffer some sort of allergy by 2015."

►February 17, 2004 - the allergy riddle ; It's a modern plague - but why DO so many suffer? In this provocative analysis, one writer offers his own uncomfortable explanation - Daily Mail, London via http://i-medreview.subportal.com - "THIS is a plague like no other. By 2015, half of the population may be afflicted...Thirty years ago these conditions were rare, so something must have changed dramatically in our lifestyle or environment. But the figures suggest there is no single underlying cause...But are we really to believe that half the country will be allergic in a few years' time?..Maybe GPs' waiting rooms will, indeed, be full of allergy sufferers. But then again, they might just be full of those who are suffering from the oldest illness in the medical dictionary: hypochondria."
►February 2004 -

'Until it hit home with me, I had no idea of the severity and risk of fatality involved. It's startling when you first learn about it.'"
Comment: What is the incidence of allergy among infants allowed to breastfeed on demand, particularly those that are allowed to wean themselves or nurse until toddler age and beyond? And, of course, what is the incidence among the vaccinated compared to the never vaccinated? And if the vaccinated are more allergic, is there some protective effect of breastfeeding among the vaccinated? (For more on the possible relationship between vaccination and allergies, go to Out of Control: "Childhood vaccinations and the risk of asthma" - a CDC study.
►February 15, 2004 - Study finds link between stronger immunity, exposure to dogs (requires registration) - KRT Wire via Milwaukee Journal Sentinel via The Kansas City Star - "Infants who have a certain gene and live with a dog have stronger immune systems than those who don't and are less likely to develop allergies or eczema, a University of Wisconsin-Madison research study shows...However, the authors warn that the results are still preliminary and say that parents shouldn't introduce pets into the household just to try to prevent potential allergies."

The study, published today in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, lends support to the well-known "hygiene hypothesis," which contends that early exposure to infections might protect children against allergic diseases in later years."
Comment: And what about immune response via vaccination that occurs without fever? Might it predispose TO allergies? (One small study suggests that the vaccinated may have more allergies. For more on this go to Out of Control: "Childhood vaccinations and the risk of asthma" - a CDC study.)
