"Flu Vaccine in a Spray Wins Vote From Panel"
New York Times (www.nytimes.com) (12/18/02) P. A28
MedImmune, a Gaithersburg, Md.-based manufacturer, received a vote of support from a panel of Food and Drug Administration advisors for its FluMist nasal spray influenza vaccine. The panel determined that the vaccine was safe and effective for healthy people ages five to 49. For individuals aged 50 to 64, the panel said that the vaccine is safe, but some panel members said there is insufficient data to determine FluMist's effectiveness in that age group. The panel's support of the vaccine mean that the FDA will likely approve it for sale; the FDA generally follows the recommendations of its panels.
